The 1998 Villarrica Harp Festival.  I had just gotten my new Chevrolet Prizm off the boat and for the first road trip, my friends Toti and Sepni convinced me to drive to Villarrica for a harp festival they knew about.  On our ride there, one of the biggest and most torrential thunderstorms I have ever been in in my life burst open on the highway.  It rained so hard that we had to pull over and wait it out.

We heard that it had rained so hard that the road was washed out behind us.  Some of the harpists had already arrived in Villarrica, but a lot of the participants couldn’t make it, and the conditions were so bad the the festival was canceled.

BUT, Toti and Sepni knew the festival organizer and had arranged for us to stay there with some of the harpists who had made it and other friends of theirs.  So, here it was.  Some friends, four of Paraguay’s best harpists, and some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard, playing dance and laughter all night long…

If you have never heard the Paraguayan harp, you really owe it to yourself to listen to this beautiful music.  And be nice to a harpist the next time you meet one…

Invited to breakfast and I am blown away by this light.  But I shouldn’t be.  It’s Paraguay and there is something here that bends the light a certain way.  The ladies may be doing the best thing for them, breakfast being a balm for their hangovers, but a big glass of water and more sleep would probably be even better…
So, the light is so intense that Suzy and Miriam have to partially draw the shade, which only makes the light better.  They’re not doing this for me.  It’s self protection.
Oh, and let me tell you: the Germans have a firm foothold in Paraguay, god love ‘em.  The beer and sausages are excellent.
